The Stud and choice of stallion

THE STUD:  The care of visiting mares is very important to us as we had run into problems ourselves when sending our mares away to stud in the past.  We have endeavored to make the premises as safe as possible - post and rail for visiting mares with young foals, etc.

Over recent years we have been veterinary recommended to owners with mares that need special care during stud visits.  Penmellyn Veterinary Practice is very close to the stud and we are blessed with having a good rapport with both the vets themselves as well as the office staff.

We are a small stud and offer personal attention to mare owners, aiming to give visiting mare’s individual attention that cannot always be guaranteed at larger studs.  Kings Composer has excellent fertility however, sometimes mares have individual problems and the Penmellyn Veterinary Practice is excellent in dealing with fertility problems.

CHOICE OF STALLION:  Kings Composer was purchased from a local breeder at just 6 months old and at that time we only had dreams for his future which have now turned into reality.

Kings Composer is continuing the West Country tradition of producing versatile progeny well suited to eventing.  Until recently we only covered a small book of mares annually and from those limited progeny King has already produced several winning event horses.  Kings progeny are suited to amateurs and professionals alike, with Mary King and Lucy Wiegersma having winning rides as well as amateurs with home produced youngsters having their own share of success.

Kings Composers progeny are very correct with lovely limbs and are much sought after for the show ring, but this should not put off the sports horse breeder as in 2006 Tregew Lace owned and bred by Brenda Sweet gained 30 BE points, won the Baileys Futurity 6yo eventing section and had been included in the 2012 Olympic Equine Pathway – as a yearling Tregew Lace was champion filly at the National Hunter Show as well as winning the Sports Horse Yearling class, beating Dalcotes Manton, Lucy Wiegersma’s winning ride into second place.

Kings Composer competed successfully in his own right, qualifying for BSJA second rounds and was 2nd in the Grade C championship at Royal Cornwall.  He was champion thoroughbred at the SHB (GB) Stallion Grading and has proven he can complement all types of mares, producing progeny which have an excellent attitude to work, together with a great technique over a fence – “possibly the ideal sire for the perfect Sporting Horse”!

Kings Composer is by “SOUSA” who produced mainly National Hunt and Point to Point winners, as well as David Green’s Olympic horse Chatsby and Helen West’s advanced horse Hasty Arrival.  Kings Composer is out of a Kinglet mare, who was a renowned National Hunt sire of the 80’s and whose own sire was Pampered King, the sire of Deep Run.  With this classic and tough National Hunt breeding, as well as progeny competing successfully, with Show Jumpers, HOYS show horses as well as event horses, Kings Composer definitely ticks all of the boxes as a proven sire of competition horses.

Kings Composer success graded with the SHB (GB) in 2001, which confirmed our belief in him.  Stallions with conformation faults and lack of competition records do not grade and this is why to date Kings Composer is the only Cornish bred, graded stallion standing in Cornwall

Two other Cornish stallions have both been presented for grading after Kings Composer successfully graded but both have failed.  However good your mare is, however successful she has been in competition, you should not contemplate using a stallion with a conformation problem and we would also like to point out to those of you who are looking for suitable stallions for your mares, that they should check all details which they receive with stud cards.  Most official organizations are more than happy to confirm (or not as the case may be) competition details of the stallions themselves as well as there progeny.

We are more than happy to discuss all aspects of grading etc with anyone, even if you feel Kings Composer is not suitable for your mare we are willing to give you advice on how to find the right stallion, at the right stud!
